Legian is located only 20 minutes away from the airport and is more sophisticated than central Kuta with a slightly quieter and more relaxed atmosphere. None of the major clubs are located in Legian so only a short taxi ride to Kuta or the double six area will reveal the larger clubs and Legian is also very close to the sophisticated Seminyak region where some of the best dining and some excellent elegant bars and small world music joints are located. On the beach the crowds are far fewer than around the main area of Kuta and the resorts on the beach are well spread out so the feel is a lot more relaxed and tranquil although you can still take the short walk down the beach to get involved in the more social side of things if you wish.
